An oval pit circa 45 by 30 metres in size was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1947 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The visible earthworks correspond with a pit shown on the OS First Edition 25 inch map and labelled as Old Marl Pit within a small orchard, and was therefore not transcribed by the survey. The pit is not depicted on Tithe Map for Membury and the plot (870) is listed as an orchard. The marl pit therefore probably passed out of use by the mid-19th century and was subsequently reused as an orchard. The earthworks are obscured by dense tree cover on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2014.
