Full description

Department of Environment, 1986, Dunsford, 23 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV340721.

Barn and wall immediately to the south of Sowton Barton. Barn and section of wall. The barn is C17 or earlier in origin with some C20 modification. Whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings with a slate roof gabled at ends and the east gable end weatherboarded with granite buttresses. Cob wall with slate capping. The barn is a 3-bay fragment of a larger structure that, at one time, extended further to the left (east). It is a 3-bay building, lofted at the left end. The east gable end wall has been modified after a C20 fire. Single storey to the right, loft over to the left end. The north elevation, facing the farmyard to the rear of Sowton Barton, has a wide doorway to the right with a plank and cover strip door with strap hinges. Stone steps against the front wall lead up to a loft entrance on the front right. The east gable end has 2 reset 3-light timber mullioned windows to the loft and a truncated jointed cruck truss. The right-hand end has a 3-light timber mullioned window in the gable.
Interior: in addition to the jointed cruck truss in the east wall, there are 2 similar trusses. The loft floor may also be of the C17. A section of tall cob wall with slate capping links the barn to the south end of Sowton Barton. An unusual survival for the region of a pre 1700 farmbuilding which forms a particularly attractive group with Sowton Barton. A 1918 sale catalogue in the possession of the owner shows the east gable end wall rendered and whitewashed.
