Full description
Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.
Ordnance Survey, 1938, 109NW. Revision of 1904 with additions in 1938. Provisional Edition (Cartographic). SDV336779.
Department of Environment, 1986, Bovey Tracey, 66 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV297013.
Jenkinson, T., 2004 - 2011, A382 Newton Abbot to Whiddon Down (Report - Survey). SDV338864.
Site visit 3rd September 2003. Milestone dated circa 1826 located on Bovey Straights, on grass verge just north of pull in on west side of road. The legend reads 'Newton/4/4/0/Bovey/1/6/0/Moreton/8/2/0'. Worn and dirty, with chip to top edge. Located very close to busy road. Possible error in the mileage for Newton as it is inconsistent with other markers. The Newton Bushel (Abbot) Turnpike Trust of 1765 once maintained the route from Newton Abbot to Moretonhampstead. In 1826 the Trust was charged with the responsibility of repairing the road out to Whiddon Down passing through Bovey Tracey and Moretonhampstead. Whilst the Trust seems to have undertaken the task as far as Moreton setting up a series of milestones to mark the way, the road beyond was never properly repaired and hence there are no milestones along this stretch. Each surviving stone shows the distances to Newton, Bovey and Moreton recorded in miles and furlongs and possibly chains or poles making them a unique collection in Devon.
