In 1858 a company obtained an act of parliament to provide Barnstaple with a more efficient system of water supply; a reservoir was built at Westaway and water was taken from the River Yeo some 5 miles from the town. A further act of parliament of 1888 empowered the company to construct another reservoir on Pickard's Down. Water was pumped from Westaway by steam power; the steam engine has been removed but the pale-brick engine house and chimney can still be seen at Westaway.

Ordnance Survey, 2012, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV348725.

The site of the waterworks has now been developed and a later covered reservoir is shown to the west on modern mapping.
