'Barnshill' shown on 19th century map as a group of buildings on both sides of the road.
Gover, J. E. B. + Mawer, A. + Stenton, F. M., 1931, The Place-Names of Devon: Part One, 287 (Monograph). SDV1312.
Turton, S. D. + Weddell, P. J., 1989, An Archaeological Assessment of the South Devon Spine Main (Roborough to Littlehempston), 4 (Report - Assessment). SDV138026.
Medieval documents suggest that this settlement may be earlier than the 17th century and the behaviour of the parish boundary at this point tends to support this.
Goodyear, R. I., 1990, Deserted Farm Site (Migrated Record). SDV338765.
Barons Hill is mentioned in the Feet of Fines of 1619 as 'Baronshill'. Probably associated with Hugo Baron in the lay subsidy rolls of 1330.
