The shaft where copper ore was first discovered, in 1844, was named Gard's Shaft and became part of Wheal Maria, one of the principal elements of Great Consols.

Gard's Shaft marks where ore was first discovered at the Main Lode of Wheal Maria in 1844 & is shown on the 19C maps. The survey found the shaft sited in an elongated depression c5m x 5m x 0.7m deep with spoil heaps & a granite marker post.
