A fortified house called Hayne Castle stood on a mound on the hill to the south of the present mansion. The present mansion was built c.1810 on the site of an earlier house dating to the late 15th-early 16th century.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1973, SX48NW6 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV260122.

Site visit 24th February 1951. Alleged site of Hayne Castle. There is no historical information available. The site is now under plough and there are no surface remains. The 1907 2 inch and 6 inch Ordnance Survey maps appear to be the only documentary evidence for the castle.
