Full description

Milestone on roadside about 10m west of The Cottage. C18. Freestone rectangular milestone inscribed 'IIII miles from Exeter'. This may be the stone referred to in the Sites and Monuments Register [HER} showing the limit of the Exeter Turnpike Trust's responsibility on the steep road up to Haldon, previously noted at SX876-871-.

Site visit 27th January 1997. Milestone sitting on (set into) concrete outside drive entrance of The Cottage, on side of road. Carved `IIII Miles From 'Exon'.
Probably slightly chipped away on the west side as the letter 'S' in miles is against/over the edge. Otherwise in a good state of preservation.

Site visits 11th February 2013 and 27th September 2025. Milestone by The Cottage, on the west side of the road, on the left side of the entrance drive, about 200m south of Arch Bridge. Inscribed IIII/Miles/From/Exeter/. The stone which dates from c.1823 is free standing. It is worn but legible. Possibly a private marker.
