Full description

Gover, J. E. B. + Mawer, A. + Stenton, F. M., 1931, The Place-Names of Devon: Part One, 76 (Monograph). SDV1312.

First recorded 1167. Tosberry contains the place name element Berry from the Old English Burh, meaning an enclosure.

Pearce, S. M., 1985, The Early Church in the Landscape: The Evidence from North Devon (part), 266 (Article in Serial). SDV336495.

The name may hint at an enclosed settlement of the post-Roman round type although nothing has been recorded in the field.

Collings, A. G. + Manning, P. T. + Valentin, J., 2007, The North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Phase 1. Archaeological Survey. Summary Report, No. 93 (Report - Assessment). SDV339712.

Although first recorded in 1167, Tosberry is inferred to have been the property of the 12 canons of Stoke St Nectan in 1086.
