Possible Early Christian graveyard. South Welsh borders 'stow' placename element may replace Welsh 'llan' or 'enclosed cemetery'. No evidence for this usage in Devon, however, Pearce argues that the churchyard at Virginstow, first recorded in 1174-83 (Gover et al in Pearce), is morphologically of an Early Christian type, particularly the rounded eastern boundary.
