Morgan Giles shipyard was on the site of the present temporary car park. Yachts built here until just before the First World War, and the yard was then derelict until taken over by Morgan Giles in 1921. Several lifeboats were built there between 1939-1949, and during the Second World War the yard contributed to torpedo boats, harbour defence boats and pinnaces, then after the war supplied inshore minesweepers. Several training craft were built for Royal Naval college in the early 1960s. Before it closed in 1968 the firm became internationally renowned for luxury yachts and motor cruisers.
