Oak charcoal from the fossil ground surface beneath the long barrow produced a radiocarbon 14 date of 6360BC (plus or minus 100). This may indicate a phase of primary forest clearance in the Mesolithic. The old turf line indicates that the barrow had been built upon grassland but sampling for pollen proved unsuccessful.
