Summary

Cropmarks which have formed over infilled ditches of a possible prehistoric or Romano-British enclosure are visible on aerial photographs of 1966 onwards, to the northwest of Hayes Farm. The enclosure is located in an area where a large number of other such cropmarks have been recorded, including a number of other enclosures, as well as numerous ring ditches. Excavation in 2020 sugges a post-Rorman or Early Medieval date.

Cropmarks which have formed over infilled ditches of a possible prehistoric or Romano-British enclosure are visible on aerial photographs of 1966 onwards, to the northwest of Hayes Farm. The rectilinear shaped enclosure measures approximately 42m in length by 33m in width, with well-defined sides to the west, northwest and southeast, but less so to the northeast and east. The enclosure is located in an area where a large number of other such cropmarks have been recorded, including a number of other enclosures, as well as numerous ring ditches. The area forms part of an important prehistoric and Romano-British landscape and has been subject to fairly extensive aerial survey.

A trapezoidal ditched enclosure (Enclosure D) was located in the north part of Area 2. It had been seen as a cropmark and geophysical anomaly and also investigated by evaluation in 2017. It was observed to have cut the subsoil layer, which was seen in the 2017 evaluation to have sealed Enclosure C (MDV43233).
It was oriented NE-SW, 42m by 39m with a substantial gap on the south side. It may have been constructed in several phases, or some parts may possibly have suffered more from truncation. There is some suggestion of intentional backfilling.
Very few features were associated with the enclosure. The only internal feature was a hearth in the SW corner, from which no artefacts were recovered. A charred grain from a large assemblage of grain processing waste produced a radiocarbon date consistent with a post-Roman/early medieval date.
