The depression corresponds with an 'Old Marl Pit' depicted on the First Edition OS map and is situated within a plot recorded as 'Lower Bank' and under woodland in the Tithe Survey, indicative of earthworks (MDV106861).
The depression is interpreted as a marl pit of post-medieval origin to 19th century origin, that ceased extraction by the late 19th century.
