A small shipyard existed at Ford Yard from at least the 1930s. Run by Blackmore and Sons, it produced wooden minesweepers and small patrol boats during World War Two. Closed in 1956 when the company moved downstream to Cleave Houses.

The shipyard was at the south end of what has been Ford Timber Yard. It operated from the 1930s to the1960s. Most of the site was a covered yard which became an agricultural implements depot before being demolished.
