Full description

Baring Gould, S., 1894, 1st Report of the Dartmoor Exploration Committee: The Exploration of Grimspound (Article in Serial). SDV304196.

Hut 2. A cattle pen with an enclosing wall consisting of a single ring of large stones originally set on edge and not backed up with smaller stones and earth. No lintel distinguishable, probably never roofed. Unusual width of doorway. No trace of a floor.

Baring Gould, S., 1895, Second Report of the Dartmoor Exploration Committee, 82-3 (Article in Serial). SDV271711.

Ordnance Survey, 1953, SX78SW11 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV304167.

Pattison, P., 1991, A Survey of Grimspound, Manaton Parish, Devon (Report - Survey). SDV304224.

Hut 2 is sub-circular and measures 3.5 meters in diameter, the wall remains to a height of 0.4 meters and is constructed of large slabs, many not remaining in situ. The entrance is 1.25 meters wide and is flanked on the south side by two large recumbent slabs, probably former door jambs. No trace of a lintel remains. This hut lies in fairly dense heather and the interior was disturbed by the 1894 excavations and more recent animal burrowing. There is evidence for reconstruction at the north end. Other details: 6 and fig.

Gerrard, S., 1995, 140322 (Site Visit). SDV321021.

Hut circle 2 is terraced into the hill slope and has a simple plan and single orthostat walling type. The interior of the hut is 3.5 meters in diameter, defined by a 1.3 meter wide wall standing up to 0.8 meters high. A 1.25 meter wide south-south-west facing gap in the surrounding wall and flanked by upright slabs may represent an original doorway. This hut circle was excavated by the Dartmoor Exploration Committee in 1894 and interpreted as an unroofed cattle pen.
