Full description

HARRIS, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV22166.

At ventiford the railway line passes between the stover canal and the granite tramway. Re-used tramway stone can be seen in some of the walls at ventiford. The tramway terminated on the quay on the w side of the canal. The railway embankment has obliterated it but the base of a crane is still visible beneath an overgrown mound. Built by george templer who was developing the haytor quarries from 1813. Total of 10 miles of tramway including branches. Individual track blocks were of cut granite, averaging 5' long (harris).

Best seen near haytor quarry, where the tracks and points are clearly discernible (dcc).

Pye, A., Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV7765.

Built 1820, linking ventiford basin with haytor quarries. Its course where it adjoins the basin (sx87sw/167) is depicted on several plans, including 1838 tm, which shows it as a single line down into the w side of ventiford basin.1848 plan shows it branching into 2 immediately s of a bridge carrying it over the ventiford brook. This may indicate that branches ran down both sides of the basin. However, on an 1861 plan it is not shown to s of brook, although its course is aligned on the w side of the basin. The tramway was abandoned by 1858 and the section around the basin may have been removed by 1861. Its course has been directly overlain by the later railway embankment (pye).
