Summary

A former quarry or extractive pit of probable post-medieval to 19th century date shown on 19th century map to the south of Forder Brook. The quarry remains identifiable on aerial photographs of 1946 but has been destroyed by the construction of the A38.

A pit is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946 on the north-west facing slopes south of Bittaford. The visible earthwork corresponds with a feature depicted on the Tithe Map for Ugborough and a pit annotated on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map as an ‘Old Quarry’, indicating that the pit had passed out of use by the later 19th-century.
The pit is not identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and has probably been destroyed by the construction of the A38.
