An irregularly shaped pit circa 112m long and 43m wide and associated mounds are visible on aerial photographs on 1946 onwards as an earthworks on the south-east facing slopes south of the road at Dunwell Cross.
The visible earthworks correspond with an old quarry depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map. The earthworks also correspond with a dashed area depicted on the Tithe Map for Modbury, listed on the apportionments as waste (plot 274), within a plot called Higher Kiln Park.
The supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of a quarry and associated spoil heaps that ceased to be worked prior to the 1840s.
The earthworks are co-located with a small area of Middle Devonian limestone, as shown on the BGS 1:50000 bedrock map.
It is therefore possible that the pits are the remains of a limestone quarry, possibly associated with a former lime kiln within Higher Kiln Park.
The earthworks remain clearly identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019, although the mounds appear to be somewhat reduced in since the 1940s.
