'Milestone' indicated on 1933 6" OS map.

Milestone situated approx 100m south of turn to Lower Well Farm, on bank above east side of road. Inscribed '4 Miles From Totnes'. Worn with chips across the back. Residues of paint. Also has an OS benchmark. This is an unusual road to find milestones along. The immediate assumption would be that they were placed by the Totnes and Berry Pomeroy Turnpike Trust sometime after its inception in 1762. However, there is a reference to a route between Ipplepen and Galmpton that was managed by the Newton Bushel Turnpike. All the stones show distances to Totnes and are now rather worn and difficult to espy.
