An irregularly shaped pit circa 70 by 40 metres in size was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1947 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The visible earthworks correspond with a pit shown on the OS First Edition 25 inch map and labelled as Old Marl Pit. The pit is not depicted on Tithe Map for Membury, the plot depicted as an orchard. The pit therefore probably passed out of use by the mid-19th century before being reused as an orchard. The earthwork was not transcribed by the survey.
