Full description

Masson Phillips, E. N., 1937, The Ancient Stone Crosses of Devon: Part I, 333 (Article in Serial). SDV240502.

Stands in the churchyard, near west gate. Type b. An ancient shaft, square at the base and chamfered into an octagon above, has been restored 1928, by the addition of a new head and arms and placed in the churchyard. It was found in use as a gatepost close to the junction of the lane to the church and the main road to Hatherleigh, which may have been its original site. The portion of the shaft below turf level is rough and projects irregularly on one side, showing that the cross never stood in a socket stone.

Department of Environment, 1983, Okehampton (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV342832.

Medieval churchyard cross. Chamfered granite shaft with stops at base, about 5 feet high. The cross on top is a modern restoration.

Okehampton Churchyard SX582951
A cross stands under a tree in the churchyard near the west gate. It consists if an ancient shaft, square at the base and chamfered into an octagon above, restored in 1928 by the addition of a new head and arms, and placed in the churchyard. It was found in use as a gatepost close to the junction of the lane to the church and the main Hatherleigh road. It has been suggested that this may have been its original site. An interesting feature of the shaft is that the portion below turf level is rough and projects irregularly on one side, showing that the cross never stood in a socket stone.
Cross height 2.06 metres, span 0.48 metres.
