Nos 2-4 John Street. Two terraced houses; probably circa 1846. Cast iron windowsills. Slate roofs, tarred at no 4. Red brick chimneys (probably 20th century rebuild) on party walls.
Exteriors: two storeys with semi-basements. No 2 has centre doorway with window to right; window at either end of upper storey. Wooden shop front to left of ground storey, on rounded and recessed corner; one window in each storey to wellbrook street. No 4 has window in centre of each storey with house-door to left, entrance to through-passage on right. No 2 has raised band between storeys, carried round the Wellbrook Street front and across the whole of John's terrace. Door at no 2 has six ovolo-moulded panels arranged in two rows; cast-iron knocker, fanlight with diagonally-set, intersecting 'Tudor' glazing-bars. Door at no 4 has three tall, ovolo-moulded panels in a single row. Both houses have two-paned sash windows to John Street, each sash with a single upright glazing bar. Six-paned sashes to Wellbrook Street. Doorway and ground-storey windows at no 2 have curious hood-moulds consisting of two upright blocks of wood supporting a short piece of board. Shop window has 12 panes; Doric pilaster at left-hand end, supporting entablature. Semi-basement windows to John Street have patterned cast-iron grilles. No 2 has deep projecting eaves with feet of rafters exposed, on both fronts; lion-heads on the gutters. On raised band to Wellbrook Street is a shaped cast-iron plaque inscribed 'John's Terrace'. Marked as later additions on Heathcoat estate atlas of 1844.
