Full description

Department of Environment, 1989, West Exe Spot List (Un-published). SDV349237.

Nos 6 - 24 John Street. Terrace of ten working-class or artisans' houses. About 1846. Rendered, solid front walls. Cast-iron window-sills. Slated roofs, tarred except at nos 10 and 20. Red-brick chimneys on ridge, probably rebuilt in 20th century.
Exteriors: two storeys with basements. One window to left of each storey, with doorway to right. Openings have slightly curved heads. Original doors survive at nos 8, 12 and 24; these have three tall, upright moulded panels with old knockers and letterboxes. Other houses have late 20th century wooden, plastic or aluminium glazed doors. Windows with two-paned sashes survive at all but nos 14, 16 and 22; these have late 20th century aluminium-framed windows. Basements have patterned iron ventilator-grilles. Interiors not inspected. Shown as a later addition on Heathcoat's 1844 estate atlas.
