Summary

Sixteen new houses were planned for Church Street in the 1840s. Those on the west side of Church Street and the north side of St Paul's Square survive, but there is no evidence for those planned for the west side of the street.

In the 1840s, sixteen new houses were planned for Church Street. In the early 1870s plans were devised by the architect John Hayward for a workman's hall and six adjacent cottages to be located in Wellbrook Street and Church Street, plus three others some distance away. The ten new houses on the west side Church Street and the north side of St Paul's Square, shown on the plan of the survey of Heathcoat property in 1844, were built. However the site of the six houses planned for the east side has been redeveloped. The Ordnance Survey Town Plan of the mid to late 19th century shows only three buildings at this location, and it is possible these six houses were not built.
