Full description

Laithwaite, M., 1988 - 1989, Resurvey of Historic Buildings in Bideford (Un-published). SDV341490.

Pair of late 19th century houses, set back from the street behind front gardens, their side walls partly overlapped by earlier buildings at either side. Red brick fronts with dressings of painted stone or cement. Slated roofs with red ridge tiles. Red brick chimney with projecting upper courses forming a cap on front slope of each side wall; round red pots.On rear slope similar pots visible behing the ridge. Single fronted, double depth. Mirrored fronts with a canted bay window at each outer end and parallel doorways in the centre. Above the doorways a single window, glazed on outside but blocked on the inside. Openings segmental-headed. Six panelled doors with old letterboxes and knockers; plain fanlights. Mullioned and transomed, wood framed windows (except that the middle second storey window and the side-lights of the bays have no mullions). The lower lights 2-paned with a horizontal glazing bar, the upper lights 9 paned. Ground storey lights of the bays have panelled bases. Raised brick band above ground storey and continued sills in second storey (both now painted), forming pedestal course. Window heads in second storey linked by a painted stone or cement band. Covered eaves -cornices carried round the bays, which have hipped roofs. Interior not inspected.
