Name:Enclosure with hut circles, north of settlement at Stanlake

Summary

D-shaped enclosure. Interior measures 41m north-south by 28m east-west and is defined by a rubble wall, up to 3.5m wide and 0.4m high. The southern length of the boundary bank is no longer visible as an earthwork, though it may survive as a buried feature. Two stone hut circles survive within the enclosure. Under dense bracken when surveyed in December 2007.

(20/06/1977) At SX 5704 7128 on a south facing slope above the River Meavy, about 50m from the south-west end of the stone row (SX57SE35) is a ruined hut circle with a diameter of 6.0m within a D-shaped enclosure of double-walled construction 1.5m in thickness, the south part of which is destroyed. Discovered during field investigation. Surveyed at 1:10000 on PFD.

(13/12/2007) A well defined Bronze Age hut circle levelled into the slope, internally 5.5m in diameter with a robbed double-faced wall of slabs and boulders up to 0.4m high. It lies within a large enclosure with in places thick double -faced walling up to 0.8m high. The second hut is less well defined and now lies under dense bracken vegetation. Surveyed at 1:2500 scale.
