Full description

Fox, A., 1963, Twenty-Seventh Report On Archaeology and Early History, 79 (Article in Serial). SDV124457.

Two small barrows or cairns with an associated stone row were discovered in Walkhampton common, Peek Hill. The centre of each mound had been dug into recently.

Grinsell, L. V. + Spooner, 1975, Cairn at north-east end of stone row (Report - Survey). SDV252636.

Site visited on 16th October 1975. Mutilated cairn at upper north-east end of stone row. Diameter 7.0 metres, height 0.3 metres. Cairn is on north-west slope of Sharpitor. Ordnance Survey drawing shows cairn with stone row at SX55067075.

Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, 1985, Aerial Photograph Project (Dartmoor) - Dartmoor Pre-NMP (Cartographic). SDV319854.

Not visible on 1946 aerial photographs.

Robinson, R. + Cosford, J., 1986, Dartmoor multiple stone circles, 166-170, Map & diagrams (Article in Serial). SDV165686.

The cairn lies on a gentle south-west slope north-east of Horseyeatt farm, with a stone row running south-west from it. The cairn is about 7 metres in diameter and 0.6 metres height, partly turf-covered, with a central hollow. The visible set stones within the cairn suggest two or three underlying concentric stone circles. These stones have a maximum height of 0.2 metres and are predominantly set with their long axes tangential to the circle.

Cairn at north-east end of stone alignment 670 metres north-east of Horseyeatt.

Cairn at Sharpitor W Stone row of 8.9 metres diameter by 0.3 metres high is badly damaged with the surface defaced by pits and hollows, The ring of small stones on end just within the body of the mound probably once stood around the edge and there are traces of two or more inner rings. The cairn became the focus of a small cemetery within a later bank and ditch to the south-east, all of them broken into.

Newman, P., 2019, An Archaeological Survey of an area of Walkhampton Common, Dartmoor National Park, Devon, Appendix, Figures 3 & 6 (Report - Survey). SDV363478.

A turf-covered round cairn which forms the terminal of a stone row (MDV12831) on the gentle western slope of Walkhampton Common, 720 metres north-east of Horseyeat. The cairn is low and spread, with a diameter of 8.8 to 9 metres. Several earthfast stones near the periphery may be considered part of a kerb or retaining circle. The centre of the mound has evidence of an unrecorded intervention, where two small mounds of earth offset slightly from the centre to north and west, lie adjacent to a hollow containing two displaced slabs of granite.

Newman, P., 2019, Walkhampton Common Survey data (GIS and Excel Spreadsheet) (Cartographic). SDV363701.

Cairn shown on survey.

Ordnance Survey, 2020, MasterMap 2020 (Cartographic). SDV363413.

'Cairn' shown on modern mapping.

Historic England, 2020, National Heritage List for England, 1019566 (National Heritage List for England). SDV363414.

Cairn surrounded by upright stones approached from south-west by alignment of small stones. The row is mostly single, but there are occasionally pairs of stones. It terminates in a taller upright, which is now in a stream bed.

Edwards, M. + Trick, S., 2021, An Archaeological magnetometer and resistance survey Horseyeatt Stone Row (site A), 2-7, figs 1-4 (Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV365148.

No ditch was detected around this cairn during survey work undertaken in 2021.
