Full description

Lowe, M. C., 1992, Toll houses of the Exeter Turnpike Trust, 89-90 (Article in Serial). SDV40109.

In 1763 the Exeter Turnpike trustees ordered that 'the turnpike gates at Bow be removed from thence to the easternmost house in Bow town'. In 1764 a committee was established 'to get a toll house built at the Turnpike Gate at Bow Cross'. Builders were paid in 1765 for building a tollhouse 'near Bow'. The Turnpike Gate was let in 1769. By 1803 there is no mention of Bow in the toll auction lists. It was probably superseded by the Barnstaple Cross Gate.

Carbonell, B. M. H. + Wauton, M., 2002, Thirteen Centuries in Bow alias Nymet Tracey with Broadnymet, 20 (Pamphlet). SDV321149.

The Turnpike Act was in operation on roads in the vicinity of Bow in 1753. In 1780 a 'fast coach' from London to Plymouth passed through Bow on four days a week. Other details: Illustration.
