Ap suggests the presence of a curvilinear enclosure, visible as a cropmark c.150m nnw of fortescue. The enclosure consists of a curved w end and a more 'triangular' e end, with a s-facing entrance. A small ditched enclosure of probable Iron Age to Roman date was visible on aerial photographs as cropmarks overlooking the Exe Valley from a position immediately north of Fortescue, Brampford Speke.
The cropmarks are curvilinear in plan with the western end resembling a ring-ditch circa 18 metres in diameter and the more polygonal shaped eastern end possibly an annexe or conjoined enclosure over 20 metres wide and 23 metres across. A break in the southern edge of this enclosure might be evidence of an entrance.
Many of the aerial photographs consulted by the survey are copies of DAPs held by the Historic England Archive. In some cases these have been recorded as separate sources. This is because variations in the way the prints have been processed could result in images on which archaeological features are visible to a greater or lesser degree than on the originals.
