HER Number:MDV51547
Name:Tramway between Low's Shaft, Hexworthy Mine and Dry Lake dressing floor

Summary

The course of a tramway, constructed before 1907, which was used for the transport of ore from Low's Shaft and the Dry Lake dressing floor at Hexworthy or Hooten Wheals Mine. An archaeological field survey in 1996 located the course of the tramway running on an almost straight course approximately northeast from a point just downslope of Low's Shaft to the Dry Lake dressing floors where the tramway splits to terminate on two embankments, the largest of which is approximately 3m high. For part of its course the tramway is visible only as contrasting vegetation, or as small indentations revealing the former positions of sleepers, but where it traversed the older streamworks it takes the form of a low, flat topped stony embankment of up to 5 metres wide with stone revetted sides in places. Two narrow water culverts, with stone clad sides were constructed for the tramway to pass over the O Brook.

The steepest section of the tram road took the form of a self-acting incline, full wagons going down pulling empty ones up.

(10/01/1996) The course of the tramway used to transport material between Low's Shaft at Hexworthy Mine and the Dry Lake dressing floor (Monument HOB UID 1065041).
Prior to 1907, all material extracted from Low's shaft was transported to the Dry Lake dressing floors at SX66057108 via a tramway. Evidence of the tramway may still be seen running on an almost straight course approximately north-east from a point just downslope of Low's shaft at SX65627082, to the Dry Lake dressing floors where the tramway splits to terminate on two embankments, the largest of which is approximately 3m high. For part of its course the tramway is visible only as contrasting vegetation, or as small indentations revealing the former positions of sleepers, but where it traversed the older streamworks it takes the form of a low, flat topped stony embankment of up to 5m wide with stone revetted sides in places. Two narrow water culverts, with stone clad sides were constructed at SX65817097 for the tramway to pass over, and where it crosses the O Brook at SX65777094, both sides of the river have been revetted, clearly as a means of supporting a bridge, which does not survive.
