Full description

Pearce Chope, R., 1934, Thirty-fourth report on Devonshire Folk-Lore, 74 (Article in Serial). SDV5509.

There is a reference in Dean Milles' Parochial Returns c.1760 to a swannery near Bradstones Well. The site is now known as Tor Marsh. The dam forming the pond still survives as a thick hedge across the valley.

Ordnance Survey, 1964, SS22SW (Cartographic). SDV343776.

The 6 inch map shows a dam-like structure at the above grid reference.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1979, SS22SW19 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV5511.

There was a swannery at Bradstone Well. Many human bones have been found there in a field called Newbury, according to parochial inquiries by Dean Milles c.1750. Bradstone Well is on the southern side of Sheepleys, opposite the north side of St Katherine Tor (citing Stanes, DCNQ, 1966, 228; Pearce Chope 1934, 73)

Hartland Quay Museum, 1981, Guide to the Coast and Shipwrecks. South from Hartland Quay (Leaflet). SDV344005.

Dean Milles, 1760, records 'Catherine Tor - under which is a marsh in ye abbot's time a swan pool'. From above the head of the fall the swannery's 20ft thick, stone revetted clay dam bisects the valley bottom. Other details: sketch map.

Collings, A. G. + Manning, P. T. + Valentin, J., 2007, The North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Phase 1. Archaeological Survey. Summary Report, No. 279 (Report - Assessment). SDV339712.
