Name:Large cairn on Holne Lee north-west of Greatcombe, Holne

Summary

One of two cairns of probable Bronze Age date on Holne Lee. Cairn has an overall diameter of 18.5m and is constructed of small boulders and comprises a central mound, 12.8m diameter, 0.9m high, which has been extensively disturbed. It is immediately surrounded by a ring, 2.9m thick and 0.5m high resulting in a cairn of embankment bowl type. See also MDV5199.

(20/04/1950) Cairn 'A' One of two cairns on Holne Lee is a large cairn very mutilated.

(28/06/1977) Two cairns lie on the crest, at the north east end of a ridge at 370m above OD.
A. SX 68496980 This round cairn, overall diameter 18.5m is constructed of small boulders and comprises a central mound, 12.8m diameter, 0.9m high, which has been extensively disturbed. It is immediately surrounded by a ring, 2.9m thick and 0.5m high resulting in a cairn of embankment bowl type. Section at 1:200 on 495.

Site visited on 13th September 1973. Mutilated cairn. Diameter 19.5 metres, height 1 metre.

(19/05/1999) One of 4 cairns on Holne Lee situated 1220 metres south-west of Fore Stoke. Round cairn. Diameter 19m, height 1.3m. The mound has been extensively disturbed with at least 4 trenches up to 0.6m deep. There is much loose stone on the n and s sides and on the northern side one has been fashioned into a shelter. Grass, bilberry gorse and bracken.

Holne Lee '5' cairn of SX68496980 of 18.0 metres diameter by 1.0 metres high is clearly visible half a kilometre downhill may have been dug into at a more recent date as the disturbed stones at the centre are yet uncovered by vegetation.

The monument, which falls into four areas of protection, includes four cairns situated on a gentle east facing slope on Holne Lee overlooking the valley of the River Dart. The southernmost cairn survives as a 19 metres diameter and 1.3 metres high mound.
