West Norton was part of the Medieval settlement of Norton. The earliest documentary reference to Norton is in 1284, but it is thought to have existed as a Manor at Domesday, when it was attached to Stoke Fleming. In the 19th century there were 4 farms: Brown's Norton, Lower Norton, West Norton and Norton Park as well as a small hamlet on the main road.
