When completed in 1970, Appledore shipbuilders yard was the largest covered dry dock in Europe. It was constructed following the closure of Richmond dock.

No early 'formal' shipyards are known here & the land was probably former saltmarsh & enclosed land. The current shipyard was constructed in 1970. Other details: Site 18.
