Full description

Stead, P. M. + Matthews, A. J., 1993, Archaeological Evaluation of Lloyds Bank Premises, South Street, Totnes, 4 (Report - Evaluation). SDV157487.

Remains of clay bonded wall (517) found in trench 3. Set within a foundation trench which pre-dates the standing walls. Runs across the width of the tenement and may be represented by a wall-scar incorporated into the east wall of the building. Only one course of stonework survives. The standing west wall was built directly over it. Robbing may have occurred at the time of raising up of area to the north, as the large granite blocks which revet this terrace directly overlie the foundations of wall 517.

Clay bonded east-west stone wall lies about 4 metres to rear of town wall foundations at point where tenement boundaries change alignment. Fragments of four other lengths of similar wall footings noted elsewhere. Probably belonged to two room house built at the rear of the main High Street tenement in the late medieval or early post-medieval period. No dating evidence recovered and no contemporary floor levels exposed.
