The medieval bridge (also known as St. Saviour's Bridge) was circa 45 metres upstream of the present bridge. It was stone-built and in existence of 1355. A chapel was built on it under the direction of Bishop Grandisson and this was still in existence in 1524. The bridge was washed away by floods in 1801. A print shows it to have been a hump-backed bridge with four arches.
