Full description
Gerrard, S., 1990-2002, Monument Protection Programme. Archaeological Item Dataset., MPP 140449 (Report - Survey). SDV277946.
(Visited 05/06/1995) Includes a cluster of nine mounds at SX 5922 6590, SX 5924 6586 and SX 5923 6585, within an historic field. Forms part of a complex multi-period archaeological landscape on the north-west slope of Hen Tor overlooking the valley of the River Plym.
Six of the mounds are circular and vary between 2m and 3.6m in diameter. The remainder are ovoid and measure between 3m and 4m long by 2m to 3m wide. The heights vary between 0.2m and 0.5m with the average being 0.3m.
These cairns lie immediately next to a series of boundary banks and hut circles, and whilst no overall pattern is discernible it is possible that these cairns were produced during initial clearance which did not have the opportunity to develop.
The dimensions of the individual mounds are as follows:-
A [SX 5921 6587] 4m by 2.6m by 0.4m high.
B [SX 5923 6588] 3.6 diameter, 0.4m high.
C [SX 5923 6588] 2m diameter, 0.3m high.
D [SX 5924 6586] 3.5m diameter, 0.5m high.
E [SX 5924 6586] 3.5m diameter, 0.4m high.
F [SX 5924 6586] 2m in diameter, 0.2m high.
G [SX 5924 6586] 2.7m diameter, 0.2m high.
H [SX 5923 6585] 3.5m by 3m by 0.2m high.
I [SX 5922 6590] 3m by 2m by 0.2m high.
Bluesky, 2006 - 2007, Bluesky aerial photographs 2006 - 2007 (Aerial Photograph). SDV341189.
Several of the features recorded by Gerrard could be identified on the aerial photograph (although not discernible on the 2010/2015 images or the lidar data). Cairns G and I were not confirmed on the aerial image.
