Name:Pillow Mound associated with Ditsworthy Warren, Sheepstor

Summary

This very fine pillow mound is located on a fairly steep north-east by south-west facing hillslope at SX 5829 6758. The mound is 14.9 metres long, 4.1 metres wide and 0.9 metres high. Externally the base of the structure is constructed of moorland slabs, boulders and stones; the upper part is a turf-covered earthen mound. The ditch, on the upper and long sides, is 2.5 metres wide and 0.6 metres deep. A slight ditch (0.7 metres wide and 0.3 metres deep) some 6.0 metres to the north-east appears to have been dug to deflect surface water from the site.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1979, SX56NE147 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV232455.

(01/06/1977) A pillow mound, situated at SX 58296758 on the west-facing slope on the west side of Ditsworthy Warren. The nearest pillow-mounds to it are the group 5000.0m. to the south-west. It is 14.5m. in length, 4.2m. wide and 0.8m. high, and is revetted with stones on sides and ends, the only one in this area to be so constructed. It is aligned with the slope, and encompassed by a shallow ditch.
Surveyed at 1:10 000 on P.F.D.
Found during field investigation.
