Summary

Eastern of two barrows in a field to the north-east of Halwill Junction which has been cut through by a hedge running from north-south. It survives as a mound about 33 metres diameter and up to 1.65 metres high.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1950 - 1978, SS40SW7 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV2172.

A bowl barrow partly destroyed on east side where it is cut into by large hedgebank. Diameter 28.5 metres by height 1.4 metres. No evidence of ditch. Second of two barrows standing in pasture field and probably safe from further ploughing for some time to come. Bowl type barrow, fairly well preserved, although edges have spread a little in ploughing. Eastern extremity lies under a stone hedge and the ditch has been dug through the barrow. No trace of surrounding ditch.

Barrow C. One of three barrows near Halwill Junction. Barrow 88 feet diameter by height 3 feet 6 inches and crossed by a hedgebank. None of these mounds appear to have been opened. The barrow was ploughed in the war. Other details: Monument 71.

Site visited on 27th September and 28th November 1979. Diameter 26.9 metres, height 1.16 metres. Hedge running north to south over mound. Spread at edges, but otherwise still intact. Grass covered, no visible ditch, fair condition.

The monument, which falls into three areas of protection, includes three bowl barrows located on a high ridge which forms the watershed between the tributaries of the River Carey to the west, and those of the River Torridge to the east. Most spurs along the ridges in this area are rich in barrows, which indicates that the area was the focus of ritual activity in the past. The three barrows are aligned west-south-west to east-north-east. The eastern barrow survives as a 33 metres diameter circular mound standing up to 1.65 metres high. A substantial field boundary bank crosses the mound from north to south on its eastern side and the ditch associated with this boundary has partly cut into the mound. Surrounding all three mounds, though now cut away on the western side of the westernmost mound, were ditches from which material was quarried during their construction. These have become infilled over the years but now survive as buried features 2 metres wide. All fences and fenceposts are excluded from the scheduling, although the ground beneath is included.
