Name:Floodlight Trailer and Tractor Shed, Dunkeswell Airfield

Summary

Former garage that housed a portable floodlight during the Second World War. Built of rendered brick with streel trusses supporting a corrugated asbestos roof. Part of a group of air traffic control buildings once characteristic of Second World War airfields. The survival of such groups is rare, and unique in conjunction with such a well-conserved airfield landscape of this period.

Full description

Francis, P., 1995, Blackdown Hills Airfield Survey. Dunkeswell and Upottery, 6, Fig. 21 (Report - Survey). SDV312951.

Floodlight tractor and trailer shed. Construction: 4.5 inch rendered brick, steel trusses, corrugated asbestos roof. Function: garage for portable floodlight (chance light) normally used with drem mk.2 runway lighting. Used in conjunction with circular concrete hardstandings located at each end of the runways. Has been modified with entrance/exit openings bricked up and false ceiling installed but retains original outline. All runway floodlight hardstandings are still extant.

[Part of] air traffic control group, including control tower (Building 25), fire tender shelter (Building 22) and floodlight trailer and tractor (Building 24). 1943, for the Air Ministry. All constructed from rendered brick or blockwork, with corrugated asbestos-cement roofs on steel trusses to ancillary buildings (24 and 22) and reinforced concrete to control tower.
