Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The barn appears to be shown, although the map is damaged. However, the two fields, 1300 and 1300, are called Lower Barn Field and Higher Barn Field on the Chudleigh Tithe Apportionment respectively.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Manning, P. T. + Walmsley, L. P., 1997, Devon County Council Haldon Ridge archaeological survey: Phase II, 7, No. 311 (Report - Survey). SDV294888.

Barn depicted, reached by a trackway from the road to the north.

Exeter Archaeology, 1997, Haldon Ridge Survey (Report - Survey). SDV337108.

Site visit 25th February 1997. Building, with track leading north to road, shown on current 1:10,000 map (1992) and 1st edition 6 inch map (1890, 101SE). Now ruined.
Single-storey building with pitched roof (roof now gone), long axis east-west, with central east-west dividing wall. No sign of south wall; south end of east wall has finished edge suggesting building was open on south side. North wall c.9.5m long by 2.2m high (survives to full height), built of stone; 2 doors with brick surrounds; no windows.
East wall (gabled) c.4m to top of apex - has a single window on n side with brick surround; mainly stone, some cob.
West wall stands to full height (matching the apex of east wall). However it only has a north side (4.75m wide), ie sloping roof to north, southern half of wall presumably having been removed, so the south end terminates at junction of interior east-west cross wall. There is one window.
Inside building at a height halfway between apex and eaves-levels, a single beam (tree with bark still attached) runs between e and w walls.
Interior crosswall survives to a maximum of 1m high - stone base with remnants of cob above.
Behind (south of) main building, just off south-west corner, are the remains of small outhouse/building: west wall 3.25m long x 3m high at apex (would have had south-sloping roof). South wall 2.7m long by 2.2m high. Line of north wall visible but no trace of east wall. At the eastern end of the south wall a wall returns to the south: 3m long by 2.2m high, at the southern end of which a lower wall, set against the south bank, runs east for 10.25m, ending 3.25m south of the east wall. This may have been the southern enclosing wall of the site rather than part of a building.
To the west of the northern end of the west wall of the main building there are traces of walls enclosing a small area 4.4m east-west x 6m north-wouth. Within the site, against the southern enclosing wall, there is a small circular granite `bowl', 0.7m diameter by more than 0.28m deep (base buried). The south side has a drainpipe running into it (side of bowl partly broken a way to facilitate this), presumably last used as animal drinking trough.

Bluesky International Ltd/Getmapping PLC, 2015 onwards, 2015 onward Aerial Photographs (Aerial Photograph). SDV362959.

Building has been reroofed and appears to have been converted to a dwelling.

Ordnance Survey, 2025, Mastermap 2025 (Cartographic). SDV366286.

Marked as Hillside Barn.
