Full description

Gover, J. E. B. + Mawer, A. + Stenton, F. M., 1931, The Place-Names of Devon: Part One, 187-8 (Monograph). SDV1312.

The name Galford is first recorded in 1544. It is probably the same as the place called Gafulford in the Anglo Saxon Chronicle as the site of a battle between the Britons and the men of Devon in AD823. The first element is probably 'gafol' meaning tax duty, possibly referring to a ford where payment was exacted for crossing.

Dyer, M. J., 1997, Two Castles Trail Survey (Worksheet). SDV269358.

Site visit November 1997. Galford farmhouse. C17 origins with C18 remodelling and C19 alterations. Rendered; slate roof. Listed grade ii. Now split into main farmhouse and two adjoining barn conversions: 'The Saddlery' and 'The Barn'. Galford(e) is first recorded in 1544; first element of name may be 'gafol' meaning 'tax duty'; perhaps referring to a ford where toll had to be paid (citing Place-Names in Devn).

Circa early C18 remodelling into a 3-storey house, 3rd storey windows blocked and roof possibly lowered in C19. Asymmetrical 3-window front with off-centre stone gabled porch, slate-hung in the gable. Ground floor window to right of porch late C19/early C20 3- light casement, 6 panes per light. Other windows circa early C18 in style are 2- light with high transoms and casements in the right-hand light below the transom, 18 panes per light, 1 window partly reglazed. 3 blocked windows high under the eaves retain their sills. Interior Ground floor room right has large fireplace with moulded granite jambs and probably replaced softwood timber lintel, cloam oven. Exposed ceiling beams. In the wall opposite the fireplace is a slate basin with a slate rim and slate-lined bowl, rediscovered during C20 renovations. There is a small plugged drain below the basin which may have drained directly into or below the former through passage. The middle ground floor room has 1 exposed axial beam.
