Possibly a market in this area since medieval times. The market once extended further north, perhaps as far as the river. This is evident from the Tithe Apportionment, which shows the field immediately to the east of Market Street as 'Pig Market'. The building shown on the Tithe Map at the north end of this field may be that shown on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map, which is marked 'Pound'. Such a building would probably have been related to the market. The Second Edition Ordnance Survey map shows a row of structures in this field which may have been related to the market, perhaps animal pens.

It is likely that livestock markets originally took place in Fore Street. By 1906 the cattle market is shown as a formal site at the north end of Market Street.
