Full description

Masson Phillips, E. N., 1937, The Ancient Stone Crosses of Devon: Part I, 332 (Article in Serial). SDV240502.

(SX 67058851). On the left-hand side of the road from Gidleigh Church to Chapple is a peculiarly worked stone in use as a gatepost. It is a tapering granite shaft of rectangular section, with edges chamfered at intervals up the shaft, and a small hole in the top. It is not possible to state definitely that it is a cross-shaft.

Worth, R. H., 1949, The Moorstone Age, Part 1, 321 (Article in Serial). SDV274816.

In the village at the southern end of the footpath which leads to Moortown, there is a gatepost. A dressed stone, square in section, with an interrupted chamfer at each angle. At the top is a drilled hole, indicating that there was a spill for the attachment of a finial. Probably a deposed pinnacle from Gidleigh Church, where the bases still stand.

Worth, R. H., 1950, The Moorstone Age, Part 2, 342 plate c (Article in Serial). SDV336081.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1951/1974, SX68NE20 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV273386.

(07/11/1951) Gate Post made from part of a pinnacle of Gidleigh Church (citing Worth, R. H., 07/12/1948).
(04/07/1974) SX 67058852. The stone which is still a gatepost is 1.2 metres high and 0.2 metres square. Its original purpose is not clear but it is almost certainly not a cross shaft.
Positioned on 1:2500.

Masson Phillips, E. N., 1954, Supplementary Notes on the Ancient Stone Crosses of Devon (Fourth Paper), 179 (Article in Serial). SDV15725.

Not a cross shaft, portion of a pinnacle, probably from tower of Gidleigh Church.
