Summary

A wheelpit probably associated with Wheal Sidney tin mine and dating to the mid-19th century was located on the west bank of the Tory Brook. The wheelpit survives as an earthwork that is identifiable on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.

Wheelpit housed waterwheel measuring 13m x 1.5m, which in january 1851 powered 400m of flat rods leading to derricks shaft. Wheelpit still exists (greeves).

Bodman associates the mill here with wheal sidney at ngr sx552-595-. He records a 45' wheel on the w bank of tory brook (bodman).

Earthworks probably associated with the wheelpit referred to by the above authorities are visible on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The visible earthworks correspond closely with a complex of earthwork features depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25inch First Edition map, which also include a smelting house (MDV61756).
The wheelpit probably operated as part of Wheal Sidney tin mine.
