Keystone Historic Buildings Consultants, 1995, Broomham, Kings Nympton: a North Devon Longhouse (Report - Survey). SDV336349.

Stone barn at Broomham farmstead in Kings Nympton. Threshing barn, on hillslope on north-south axis, close to southeast end of house, probably 18th century. Originally built of cob but much rebuilt or refaced in 19th century stone rubble, when parts adapted for other purposes. West front has rubble buttresses and some brick dressings. Main barn is 4 bays long, with secondary lean-to buildings at each end, and has central opposing doorways to threshing floor. Rear (east) doorway is wide and full height, containing double doors, but front doorway, which was rebuilt in 19th century is smaller. There are secondary lean-to buildings at each end. Roof is hipped to south and half-hipped to north, and carried on 3 unusual trusses ('A' frame, with lap-jointed collars pegged to principals which do not meet at apex). Thatch roof has been replaced by corrugated iron. North end of barn contains remains of 19th century horse engine house, including axial beam of enormous scantling, which steadied the wheel. Probably used to power a variety of agricultural processes. The only machine left is the apple crusher in the cider house, which was built as a lean-to addition on north end. This is cob walled, and part floored to provide an apple loft. Beside crusher is a mid-late 19th century press. The lean-to at the south end of the barn is an open-fronted 19th century cart or trap shed.
