Summary
A small poorly built open-roofed shelter lies on the footings of an earlier and more substantially built structure on the crest of Down Ridge some 400 metres north of Hooten Wheals Mine (SX 67 SE 191). The present structure, is used to protect young trees, measures 2.1 metres north-west to south-east by 1.9 metres and is constructed of loose drystone walls 0.9 metres high with no entrance. Below this are the well defined footings and lower courses of a similarly sized building, possibly a magazine serving Hooten Wheals Mine.

Powder house at Hexworthy Mine. Good oral information survives about this structure, which was one of the last in use on Dartmoor.
