Full description

Ancient Monuments, 1968 - 1969, Round Barrow Southeast of Meddon Plantation (Schedule Document). SDV341236.

Round barrow in corner of field of pasture, smoothed down by ploughing to 2.5 feet high and 34 yards in diameter.

Bowl barrow. Diameter 30 paces, height 3.5 feet.

1. Tumulus shown on 1963 6 inch Ordnance Survey map.
2. Bowl barrow under grass.
3. Site visit 16th October 1977. Round barrow, probably of bowl type with no evidence of ditch, situated in pasture. Approximately 24.0 metres diameter and 0.9 metres high.


Devon Committee for Rescue Archaeology, 1979 - 1981, North Devon Barrow Survey, DCRA ND50 (Archive - Survey). SDV341310.

Site visit 16th October 1979. Low mound in pasture field. Flattened and spread and heavily poached by cattle. No sign of ditch but trampling of field precludes spotting such a feature. Fair condition.

Barrow situated in an elevated upland location on the watershed between two valleys of tributaries of the River Torridge. The barrow survives as an oval mound which measures 32.4 metres long from east to west, 29.1 metres wide from north to south and is 0.8 metres high. The surrounding ditch from which material to construct the mound was derived survives as a buried feature approximately 5 metres wide.
