Summary

Settlement at Ottery St Mary developed at the junction of five ancient roads. The Manor of Ottery was first mentioned in a charter of 963AD when King Edgar granted land to Wolfhelm. In 1061 Edward the Confessor granted the whole manor to the church of St Mary in Rouen.
